While much seems to be changing in films, much is desirous of change in terms of representation of gender and diversity on-screen and off-screen, particularly around women’s representation. The last decade has seen many discussions at the national and international levels relating to women’s rights, gender equality and media representation. The #MeToo movement highlighted sexual harassment in film industries globally. In recent years, women in Hindi and regional films have found a new voice to raise further questions on stereotyped gender representation, narratives, and sexual harassment on the sets. However, much needs to be done to move the conversations towards the representation of women as active contributors to the economy through paid and unpaid work and legitimising women’s access to public spaces for work and leisure devoid of gender based violence.
U.S. Consulate General, Mumbai and the School of Media and Cultural Studies, TISS, Mumbai are partnering on a project titled ‘Lights, Camera and Time for Action: Recasting a Gender Equality compliant Hindi cinema.’
