Call for Applications for Project Positions 

This project funded by the U S Consulate, Mumbai, aims to study gender representation in Hindi films both on-screen and off-screen through quantitative research and examine gender issues in the making of films, directing films and audience perspectives of gender representation through qualitative research. 

About SMCS 

The School of Media and Cultural Studies, (SMCS) of the Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai is engaged in media teaching, production, research and dissemination. A unique feature of the School is the close linkage between its technical and academic work. The work of the School facilitates a synergy between research, teaching and production, all of which are informed by a keen sense of connection with local subaltern cultures of resistance and invention. Production is an important component of the School’s work. Its films are widely distributed and used. The School is involved in media and cultural studies research and offers a two years Masters degree in Media and Cultural Studies. More details about the School – (www.smcs.tiss.edu)

Across various years, the students with the guidance of Faculty members have created a wealth of web resources on important aspects of the city of Mumbai and archived as DiverCity , http://divercity.tiss.edu/ which houses all the thematics covered – Street Mumbai, Wastelines; Remembering1992; Giran Mumbai; CasteMopolitan Mumbai and Migrant Mumbai. 

SMCS, TISS is seeking applications to hire individuals for the positions of Project Manager (1) and Research Assistant (5) for this project. 

Please see the details of all the positions listed in the pages following this. The deadline for applying for all the positions is 7th November 2021. The shortlisting of the applicants and the online interviews will take place between 15th and 20th November 2021. Barring one position all the positions are on assignment basis and can be done online/virtually. Please apply to the positions that most suit your interest and aptitude.

SMCS Call for project positions – 22 October 2021 2 

About the Positions and the Requirements: 

Project Manager: 1 position 

This is an important administrative position of this project. The incumbent of this position will be located in Mumbai and has to attend the Institute for carrying out the project work. 

The incumbent of this position will have the following responsibilities: 

1. To coordinate the project and all the project team members and project partners 

2. Work closely with all the Faculty and project Consultants to make sure that the project deliverables and activities adhere to the timelines and work plan flow of the project 

3. Monitor and manage the project budgets 

4. Prepare quarterly reports that have to be submitted to the funders 

5. Ensure the fund flow for all the sub-projects of the overall project and 

6. Set up the project review meetings and support the Dean, SMCS for successful implementation and documentation of the project. 

Qualifications: Master’s degree preferably in Management, Accounts & Finance or any other discipline. 

Work experience: 

The applicant is expected to have at least two to three years of prior experience. 

● Knowledge of project management 

Have good communication and drafting skills to carry out all the project correspondence with internal and external research partners. 

Have knowledge of MS Office or any office management software 

Duration of the appointment: December 2021 to March 2023 

Salary: Consolidated salary of Rs 35,000 per month (subject to Tax deduction)

Research Assistants (5 positions) 

1. Research Assistant – Calling the Shots: Women Directing Hindi Cinema – Assignment Based Remote Position 

Description: 

This research study will focus on the narratives of women directors in the Hindi film industry. It will engage with their stories of entering the industry, their experiences of being part of the industry in the role of directors as well as how they see gender questions and seek to address them in their films.

Research assistance: 

● Detailed and comprehensive profile of the Directors (20-25) to be retrieved from online sources and compiled 

● Annotated bibliography of relevant scholarship and media writing on gender and cinema. 

Minimum Requirements 

1. Degree related – Master’s Degree in Media Studies/Film Studies/Women’s Studies preferred but post graduates in other Social Science disciplines are welcome to apply. 

2. Any work experience – Not required. 

3. Competence with academic writing; keen interest and knowledge of Hindi cinema. 

4. Language skills: English and Hindi required. 

Duration 

Assignment based (two months). 

Remuneration 

50,000 INR all-inclusive (subject to tax deduction) to be paid in two installments against two deliverables.

2. Research Assistant – Scripting Change: Women Screenwriters in Contemporary Hindi Cinema – Remote position 

Description: 

This research project will engage with the role of women screenwriters in the Hindi Film industry. The screenplay writer imagines the film, before anyone else on a film production. Within the contemporary period, Hindi cinema has witnessed several women screenplay writers emerge telling stories with a renewed focus on questions of gender roles in society. The study will engage with their craft and process of writing as well as their position within a largely male dominated industry and the pressures they face therein regarding conformity. 

Role: 

Research assistance: The candidate is required to research on women and screenwriting and its related fields in the Indian and international context. They will also be required to engage with the filmography of the screenwriters selected for the study. The deliverables will include an annotated bibliography.

Transcription: The candidate is also required to transcribe interviews (7-8). 

Minimum Requirements: 

Education – Master’s Degree in Media Studies/Cinema Studies/Women’s Studies is preferred. 

Language skills – comfortable with English and Hindi. Should have keen interest in academic research and watching Hindi cinema. 

Duration 

December 2021 – February 2022 (extendable to March 2022 if required) 

Renumeration 

Rs. 25,000 per month all-inclusive (subject to tax deduction)

3. Research Assistant: Qualitative Study of Young Media Critics – Remote position 

Description 

This qualitative research study will focus on audience activities that are critical of inequitable, stereotypical, and demeaning gender representations in Bollywood productions and play a key role in shaping the discourse around them. Through engaging with prominent young media critics who publish their creative work on online media, the research will highlight the important role they play in ‘talking back’ to the film industry and create awareness around specific issues of gender representation. 

Role & Responsibilities 

1. To carry out a brief review of literature related to the key themes of the study 

2. Coordination of interviews with 5-6 media critics 

3. Transcription of the interviews 

4. Production of a 10-12 minute podcast 

Minimum Requirements 

1. Degree related: MA (Social Sciences or Humanities) 

2. Work experience: No, but a writing sample is required 

3. Any language or specific skill required – Research and Writing, Coordination, Interviewing, Data Management, Transcription. The candidate should be open to learning basic audio recording and editing skills. 

Duration 

December 2021 – March 2022 

Remuneration 

Rs. 25,000 per month all-inclusive (subject to tax deduction). Limited funds are available to cover incidental expenses.

4. Research Assistant: Quantitative Study of Women in Film Crew Unions 

Description: 

This study examines the gendering of media labour in Mumbai’s film crew unions. 

Research assistance: 

Data on women members and on the committees of the film workers unions in Mumbai that are affiliated to the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) as well as in the producers’ associations and their committees to be retrieved from unions and compiled (includes data on unions’ policies to increase inclusion based on gender/ LGBTQIA if such policies are in place) 

Minimum Requirements 

1. Degree related – Master’s Degree in Media Studies/Film Studies/Women’s Studies preferred but graduates in other disciplines are welcome to apply. 

2. Any work experience – Not required. 

3. Competence with retrieving information online and in person 

4. Language skills: English and Hindi/or Marathi required. 

Duration 

Assignment based (one month). 

Remuneration 

30,000 INR all-inclusive (subject to tax deduction) to be paid in two installments against deliverables.

5. Research Assistant: Quantitative Study of Women in the Film Ecosystem 

Description: 

This study examines gender in the larger Hindi film ecosystem. 

Research assistance: 

Data on the presence of women in positions of relevance in the film industry such as 1) members of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), 2) Ministers of Information and Broadcasting, 3) Women winning the Filmfare Awards 4) Women winning the National Film Awards, 5) women graduating from the Film and Television Institute of India, Pune (FTII) and 6) women graduating from the Satyajit Ray Film & Television Institute, Kolkata (SRFTI). These will include LGBTQIA/disabilities if reported. 

Minimum Requirements 

1. Degree related – Master’s Degree in Media Studies/Film Studies/Women’s Studies preferred but graduates in other disciplines are welcome to apply. 

2. Any work experience – Not required.
