A qualitative study is planned for a project titled ‘Testing and Scaling Approaches and Interventions to Support Gender Transformative Work’ funded by Chaitanya, NGO. The project is being done by Prof Lakshmi Lingam, Dean, School of Media and Cultural Studies, TISS, Mumbai

The component of qualitative study is intended to bring out in-depth understanding and insights in terms of how the women respondents being a part of the Self Help Federations experience a sense of empowerment and changes in their families and gender relations within their families. We would also like to understand what is their levels of consciousness and understanding on caste, class and gender issues.


Sampling method

For the purpose of this qualitative study a sample size has been determined using purposive sampling to ensure adequate representation of diversity across two data points (a) Position in Federation i.e., leadership role represented by the code category of Office Bearers (OB) and (b) Federation members with adequate representation of socio-economic demography (age, marital status, education, religion, caste, employment status). By using a google survey tool basic demographic information and personal details have been collected from 124 women who are office bearers and members of Federations. A sample of 45 women will be covered for the qualitative study. An interview guide for the study is ready.


Site of the Study

The qualitative study will be located in Maharashtra in 4 districts covering 7 Federations located in Pune, Nandurbar, Ratnagiri and Amravati.


Projected timelines: The total time for this project is 2 months.


Project Deliverables

The Consultant has to fulfil the requirement of carrying out interviews, FGDs where possible, record the proceedings, make notes for each interview and transcribe interesting parts of the interview for the report, provide a draft report in English and prepare about 10 case studies in consultation with the Project Director.


Expected Competency of the Consultant

We are looking for a Consultant with expertise in qualitative research, with anthropology and/or women’s studies background. With proven experience of carrying out field research on women/gender issues and spoken and written competency in English and Marathi languages.
